The Hippo is New Hampshire’s largest circulation weekday publication with a net circulation exceeding 34,000. It is tab sized and distributed throughout southern New Hampshire at more than 1,000 locations. The paper averages 52 to 88 pages each week and is available each Thursday.

Cover Design

As part of the production team I am responsible for creating the cover and ad designs for the paper each week. However, the design process for the cover design is very different from ad deisgn. Every Friday I construct a series of cover drafts that match the theme for that week which is centered around the cover story. I make anywhere from 5-8 drafts which have various colors, pictures, and typefaces. The owners of the paper then pick a draft that they like  and I make edits to create a cohesive design.

Ad Design

Unlike the cover designs,ad design is much more fast-paced. How our workspace functions are some sales reps go out and sell advertisement space in The Hippo to clients. Once an ad has been sold the sales reps gather up any remaining information and send it to production. This information can include pictures, logos, text etc.
